Is it really possible to be a true lover of both Windows and Linux? I know that I am in my mid-20’s and this is the most interesting question for me. As you might have guessed by now, I am not a fan of either OS because I used them as my workstations for years on end. But when I was looking at their specs I realised that actually they are quite similar. While they use very different hardware and processors, they still do everything the same way and are very similar. Of course, there is something about one being faster than the other but the truth is that even though they are extremely similar, they still work perfectly, can run very specific software and still are extremely popular with many people as well as being available for new users. What makes one thing better than the other or just as comparable as each other is because of its compatibility. So why the heck would you need two completely different systems even though they are identical? Let me tell you some reasons why Linux vs MacBook should choose only one of them over the other. First of all, let me give you a list of reasons to do so.

The last time I checked, Linux vs macOS were pretty much the direct rivals. Nowadays these two OSes have come a long way in terms of features and reliability. That’s why I love Linux over macOS for myself. The first reason is that they share almost nothing in common. These two operating systems have been around a long time, have a huge range of packages of applications and a huge number of desktop programs just like Windows does. They also have a vast range of devices and hardware options like desktops, laptops, tablets, phones etc. And while Linux has been slow to adopt newer technologies, it has been making tremendous investments in modernising its components and applications. This has paid off with lower costs, less support issues, higher speed performance, and more stable apps and services etc. In short, Linux is perfect for anyone who wants to install the latest version of whatever application that they want to use. It is also great for those who feel disconnected from the older versions of Microsoft and need an easy way to upgrade their applications without having to learn how to patch files manually. If I think of it, Windows is a bit slower than Linux in adopting newer technology. However, I don’t want to say the opposite of what Linux is good for, so instead I will simply say that they do everything the same way. But if we look closely at every element of these systems then it becomes obvious that Linux is far superior to Windows.

If it isn’t Windows or Linux that makes you hate them, just ask anybody who is a big fan of both. There are pros and cons to using either OS but if you really want to get into the heart of it, these are a few that stand out:

 

Linux Has No System Scraping

 

While Windows constantly steals data from your system whenever you open up your computer. A recent leak suggested it was even stealing BIOS data and overwriting your entire hard drive. When you start doing any sort of task like installing apps and games, the process gets bogged down until it goes through multiple processes and starts again. Whereas with Linux, while the boot up process is slowed down, file backups and partitions are automatically backed up and erased if anything is wrong. This helps reduce your system downtime and allows your files to stay intact. Unlike windows, Linux doesn’t steal your system resources. On top of that, if something goes wrong, it is the most reliable system ever built. This happens because of things like NVMe SSD storage space that are fast, compact and cheap which help keep your system running smoothly. One of the main disadvantages to using Linux is that it is harder to customise. You have no control over the interface, no control over fonts, colour schemes, file formats etc. Also, Linux lacks any customization possibilities. However, there are some pros to using Linux. For example, Linux seems to be easier to install than Windows due to its simplicity. Another advantage is that Linux is very simple to manage. All the information regarding what your PC looks like is right there in your browser. This means that you don’t have to go on and figure it out. Many people complain that they get lost trying to locate the right settings and find themselves stuck somewhere else. Well, this is exactly the exact same situation when using Ubuntu or Debian which are totally free but lacking in customization. Finally, Linux uses less memory. I know this is the main complaint that Windows wins due to memory usage because it is usually more than enough. However, compared to Windows, Linux has only half the amount of RAM since some of the RAM is dedicated to virtualization instead. Still, Linux won’t stop running unless you shut it down. Lastly, Linux has fewer viruses compared to Windows. With Linux, there are fewer chances of malware attacks and viruses can harm your system so much faster. Despite all the positives, it still has a downside. At $100/year of CPU power, Linux is pretty expensive compared to Windows and macOS. Even though it's very similar, Linux is still not as easy to learn as Windows. Its steep learning curve will take months and sometimes it might even take years before you can understand the basics of coding. To put it all together, it is very difficult to decide between Linux and Macbook pro which are ideal if you want to get into programming with ease. The decision comes down to whether you want to enjoy programming with the best possible tools or you want to spend plenty of time staring at your monitor, waiting for a cursor to appear. I personally prefer Linux and write code in Python much easier and quicker than I did previously.
